About The Story® Way of Dining
Our approach to dining is truly unique: Our favorites dishes represent the region we're traveling through. We call this 'speaking the language of your food.' From our unique, off-the-beaten-path restaurants we visit for each included dinner to the variety of hand-crafted dishes, it's truly an immersion into authentic cuisine paired with wine. Your Tour Captain or Story Local Host is there to make sure your dining experience goes smoothly and will help you interpret any menu item. For the 5 total included dinners, your Tour Captain or Story Local Host will select a variety of appetizers, featuring regional cuisine, and will select your wine for the evening ~ a variety of red and white wine from the region in which you're traveling ~ and yes, "the wine does flow." It's an intentionally slow evening of delight so you can savor the experience in the local culture.

Accommodation in Palermo Area
Deluxe: Our Deluxe hotels include the spectacular Villa Igiea just outside Palermo and on some itineraries, we might stay in the city center at Grand Hotel Wagner or similar.

Day 5: Leisure Day at Resort

Resort Leisure…..La Dolce Vita
Today you can relax and soak up the sun. Sicilians enjoy the good life and their free time, and we plan to take advantage of a day much the same. Sicilians, in general, are diligent but it does not mean, they forget their love for relaxing and slow living. Sicily is the epitome of la dolce vita and siesta is a very important part of that Sicilian lifestyle. Enjoy a round of golf, sign up for a Sicilian cooking class (reservations required in advance) or lounge at poolside. You can also indulge in one of the many spa sessions offered at the resort.

Ragusa

Day 6: Agrigento and Ragusa

Ragusa
Ragusa, Sicily

Greek Temples & Baroque Sicily
This morning we say goodbye to the resort and travel along the coast to the historic town of Agrigento. There we will meet our Story Local Guide to take an in depth look at the Greek ruins known as the "Valley of the Temples". The Valley of the Temples is certainly the most important testimony of the ancient, classical culture of Sicily. It brings together the temples of gods goddesses as well as the area of the necropolis and sanctuaries outside the walls. After the tour we have a "Story Exclusive" lunch planned for you. We will enjoy a wonderfully prepared picnic lunch in the Il Giardino della Kolymbethra. Hidden among the ruins of Greek structures in the Valley of the Temples is the Kolymbetra Garden (Giardino della Kolymbethra). This under-appreciated oasis is within sight of some of the temple ruins.

Walking Level: Moderate, Leisurely Pace: Volume: Ample

On to Ragusa
Continuing along the southern coast we have our sights set on our destination for this day's journey, Ragusa. Ragusa is one of the most picturesque towns in Sicily. The view from the upper town over Ragusa Ibla on its own separate hilltop is quite breathtaking. Ragusa has managed to remain untouched and unaffected by the tourism in the region. Ragusa is a unique town since it is aristocratic and grand as well as urban and modernistic at the same time. The town is divided in two parts, the older Ragusa and the new Ragusa, both unique in their own way and totally different than each other. In 1693 Ragusa was devastated by an earthquake and when the residents had to rebuild their town there were divided opinions and that's where two groups formed, and two separate Ragusa sections were built.

Ragusa Arrival
Arriving in the middle of the afternoon assures that our rooms will be ready. We check in and relax from our amazing journey today.

Ragusa Orientation
Plan to meet your Story Tour Captain and enjoy an orientation walk of Ragusa in route to your included dinner tonight.

This villa contains the richest, largest, and most complex collection of Roman mosaics in the world. In addition, this Villa is one of UNESCO's World Heritage sites. The precious and beautiful mosaics in this Villa constitute some of the best conserved anywhere in the world today. These extraordinarily vivid mosaics, probably produced by North African artisans, deal with numerous subjects, ranging from Homeric escapades and mythological scenes to portrayals of daily life, including the famous tableau of girls exercising in their "bikinis". There will be time for a nice lunch nearby (on own) before we make our way back to Ragusa.

Siracusa

Day 9: Siracusa Immersion

Ear of Dionysys
Ear of Dionysys

Sightseeing Immersion
We are bound for the ancient city of Siracusa (Syracuse). Siracusa is well known for its rich Greek history --- culture, amphitheaters, architecture, and birthplace of the famous mathematician and engineer, Archimedes. We begin our experience with a guided tour of the historic heart of Siracusa, the island of Ortigia. After the tour, enjoy time for lunch, exploring at your leisure.

This 2,700-year-old city is right next to the Ionian Sea. Cicero once described Siracusa as "the greatest Greek city and most beautiful of them all." The Bible mentions that Paul, the apostle, stayed here in Siracusa. In 2005, the entire city of Siracusa was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Our sightseeing immersion includes the most-famous sites at the Neapolis Archaeological Zone in Siracusa, the historic section of Siracusa, including a visit to the 16,000 seat Greek Theatre, the Ear of Dionysius, and the Roman Amphitheater.

To Taormina

Day 10: Mount Etna Experience

Mount Etna

Story Exclusive®
Today after a wonderful breakfast, we set off to the north where our travels will take us to Mount Etna, the tallest active volcano in Europe. You will reach the 1800 meters level. We will spend some time at the crater (weather permitting) to get a full understanding of this volcano and its significance to the culture of Sicily. The excursion will continue with a visit of small village such as Santa Venerina or Milo, where we will stop and enjoy lunch on your own before continuing to the amazingly beautiful resort town of Taormina.

In the 1800s, after the Goethe praised its beauty throughout Europe, mentioning it in his book Italian Journey, Taormina became a mandatory stop on the Grand Tour – the long journey made in continental Europe – by the young European aristocracy of the time to enrich their own culture.

Today, it is a tourist capital of Sicily and many travelers enliven its streets throughout the year.

The ancient Greeks loved to construct their buildings in beautiful scenic locations Here they found the pairing of Etna and the bay of Naxos, with a wonderful view that when the air is clear can reach the coast of Calabria. The ancient Greek theater is a must see!

It is, surely, the main monument of the city, not only for its intrinsic artistic value, but also for the scenic location in which it is placed. The view enjoyed from up there is even defined as the view par excellence. The one that is not to be missed when in Sicily.

Walking Level: Moderate, Leisurely Pace. Volume: Ample. Unique Character: Stones and uneven terrain.

Orientation Walkabout & Story Exclusive®
After a spectacular day out plan to enjoy a little downtime today before our STORY Exclusive guided walkabout.

Taormina Cooking Class

Afternoon At Leisure
Enjoy your afternoon at leisure for last minute shopping or sightseeing. The northern entrance to the city once surrounded by fortifications built by the Arabs leads us to the struscio (stroll) the slow walk along the center of Taormina. Small craft shops, antiques shops, small streets, fragrant, multicolored alleys accompany us along the route. The first important encounter of our walk is with Palazzo Corvaja (Corvaja Palace), in the 1400s home to the Sicilian Parliament with its picturesque internal courtyard and beautiful large mullioned windows on the front. Currently the first floor houses the museum of arts and popular traditions while the ground floor is the tourist information office.

A gem is hidden near the Corvaja palace, the Naumachia, which together with the theatre, is the second important testimony of the Roman city and it is also one of the greatest Roman monuments of the island. It is a large terrace that protects a now non-existent tank. The Romans held games here simulating historical battles, hence the name.

Continuing along the Corso Umberto you arrive at the Piazza del Duomo with its beautiful baroque fountain. Enjoy your Afternoon!
